Haw River Friday April 18, 2009

The river was higher than advertised on the water level internet site. Wading was difficult despite the beautiful weather. I went back to the site later and saw that the numbers were different than the "real time" numbers at Bynum that I had seen on 4-19. I fished about 4 hours with nary a strike with any kind of fly. I saw one other fly fisherman and a father and sons in a boat below the rocks at Robeson Creek access. No one had caught anything. If the levels go down, I may try it again later this week.

Fly fishing the Haw

I am new to blogging-relatively new to fly fishing, 4 years-not new to fishing, since I was about 6. I was at the Haw River Robeson Creek Canoe access on 4-11-09 doing some volunteer cleanup with the Triangle Fly Fishers, the local Trout Unlimited Chapter. Some of the guys are very dedicated and experienced at fishing local waters, so I hoped to pick up a few pointers.

I did learn that the Haw is not an easy wade-staff is needed, and non-slick soles for sure. We were looking for white bass, or even stripers coming up from Jordan Lake. As I am told, when the dogwoods are blooming, the white bass should be running. I was able to catch one-with my 5 Wt and an intermediate line using a small white Clouser. He wasn't huge, maybe a pound, but fought well.

The water was still a little high and stained from recent rain. It was enough to get me excted, and I plan to go out again later this week when I will have a whole day to fish instead of 2 hours. Hopefully the water will be lower and clearer barring any heavy rain this week.

I am interested in the Eno, Neuse, and other waters in the triangle area if anyone else has knowledge of good spots.
